Abstract

HIS book is the outcome of a national essaywriting competition on abortion and the law. The competition was initiated by the Foro por los Derechos Reproductivos (Reproductive Rights Forum) of Argentina. Authors were invited to submit an essay on how national laws on abortion are interpreted in ways that limit women's reproductive rights. We decided to put together some of the best essays we received into a book, and this collection is the result. We made a special effort to encourage the participation of academics and other intellectuals who are actively committed to broadening the democratic framework in relation to the social construction of gender and the protection of individual freedom. The day before our awards ceremony for the winning essays, 26 September 1999, the essayist and university professor Horacio Gonzalez offered this definition of the essay in an article published in Clarin:
