Abstract

While dance studio classes can be a place for young people to be included and socially integrated, this context presents many issues which can contribute to both inclusion and exclusion. Through critically investigating literature, this chapter: Highlights the dominance of Western practices and the maintenance of Eurocentrism present within dance studio classes. Discusses what is being taught in dance studio contexts both globally and in Aotearoa New Zealand. Explores how dance is being taught within dance studio contexts. Examines how authoritative pedagogies may result in power imbalance and hierarchies between the teacher and students. Considers alternative pedagogies being used in dance studio contexts, such as creative and humanising pedagogies.
