Abstract

Dance studio teachers hold crucial roles as agents of social integration for young people participating in dance classes. A sense of belonging and social connectedness can be valued and fostered within dance studio contexts, with the dance teacher’s perspectives and pedagogical practices contributing to expressions of inclusion and exclusion. This chapter: Draws on literature to explore cultural inclusion within dance studio classes in relation to fostering a sense of belonging and social connectedness for young people. Discusses social integration in the context of dance studio classes. Highlights the crucial role dance studio teachers have as agents of social integration. Considers culturally responsive pedagogy as a significant pedagogical approach for dance studio contexts.
