Abstract

From Homer to Virgil or the return to the three functions In the boat-race episode of the "Aeneid" (V, 104-285), while transforming his homeric model, Virgil establishes a new set of values in which can be recognized the hierarchical order of those three Indo-European functions respectively illustrated by pietas, uirtus and opes. This order provides a pattern which recurs in the Italian part of the epic and which governs both heroic tales of Aeneas and Romulus, as was shown by G. Dumézil. In this way, the boat race can be seen as the symbolic fundation of romanity.
