Abstract

SUMMARYCytomorphological studies of Clemantis hatherliensis have shown that C. hatherliensis has arisen as a natural interspecific hybrid between C. orientalis and C. tangutica, the latter being the pollen parent. Chromosome configurations such as uni-, quadri- and hexa-valents both at diakinesis and metaphase I, and chromatin bridge at anaphase I were observed. As a result the plants showed partial pollen sterility. The cytogenetical mechanisms underlying speciation in the genus Clematis are briefly discussed.
