The preliminary survey of nearly 200 sets of serial sections was almost completed when her sudden death on October 1, 1937, interrupted the work. With the aid of her careful notes it was possible to complete the study of the slides and to organize the observations. The publication of the work was delayed by various circumstances; to a large extent, however, this delay is a true measure of the amount of material which Caroline Moore had collected, and of the rich harvest of interesting findings which she had barely begun to gather. The results of these investigations will be published in two papers which are dedicated to the memory of an untiring and happy worker and a true companion of her many friends.Search for more papers by this author Gerhard Fankhauser, Gerhard Fankhauser Department of Biology, Princeton University, New Jersey, and Zoological Laboratory, University of Pennsylvania, PhiladelphiaSearch for more papers by this authorCaroline Moore, Caroline Moore Department of Biology, Princeton University, New Jersey, and Zoological Laboratory, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia All the material for these investigations, with the exception of a few early stages of fertilization, was collected and prepared by Caroline Moore in 1936 and 1937 for her doctor's thesis.
