Abstract

This paper investigates the cyclical behaviour of energy consumption and intensity in the Japanese economy. It is found that energy consumption and intensity are either procyclical or acyclical, depending on the type of energy source. It is also found that there is no evidence for cyclical asymmetry in either consumption or intensity.
