Abstract

This chapter discusses the activity patterns of horned lizards, including their thermoregulatory behavior, dietary preferences, and hibernation. Horned lizards orient their bodies in relation to the sun's rays and bask under the sun for long periods. The warmth of the sun's rays and high temperatures enable them to properly digest their food. Different species of horned lizards can tolerate different body temperatures. The flat-tail horned lizard (Phrynosoma mcallii) inhabits the hottest desert and can withstand higher temperatures than other desert-inhabiting species. The Texas horned lizard (Phrynosoma cornutum) inhabits semiarid areas in warmer regions, while the short-horned lizard (Phrynosoma hernandesi) lives in cool, high mountain elevations and northern latitudes.
