3. Carefully place lubricated cotton plug in patient's ear canal with cotton pliers. 4. Secure matrix to tissue with surgical tape (Fig. 1). 5. Mix irreversible hydrocolloid according to specific needs, load syringe, and syringe irreversible hydrocolloid into and around ear; pour remaining irreversible hydrocolloid from the bowl into the matrix until full. 6. Place vented plexiglass or plastic sheeting over top of boxing wax matrix to confine the irreversible hydrocolloid and provide a flat working surface after the material has set. 7. Remove impression from ear when irreversible hydroeolloid is set. Remove or cut cotton plug from impression. 8. Melt baseplate wax in porcelain crucible and carefully pour into irreversible hydrocolloid impression; add wax where necessary (Fig. 2). 9. Remove wax ear pattern from impression when wax is set (Fig. 3). 10_ Trim base of wax ear pattern and bank for later use.
