Abstract

Evaluation of:Beiko GH, Haigis W, Steinmueller A. Distribution of corneal spherical aberration in a comprehensive ophthalmology practice and whether keratometry can predict aberration values. J. Cataract Refract. Surg. 33(5), 848–858 (2007).The application of wavefront aberrometry in ophthalmology began with excimer laser corneal refractive surgery and has expanded with the development of aspheric intraocular lens implants. While the initial clinical evaluation of these implants involved unselected populations of patients presenting for cataract surgery, more recently the concept of customized selection of the best-fit implant has taken hold. This article provides the foundation in optical and clinical science supporting the use of aspheric intraocular lens implants, explains the significance of the findings recently published by Beiko et al. and details some of the ongoing work in the area of customized correction of spherical aberration.
