Abstract

This study explores factors which have a negative impact, on the role of the School Management Team (SMT) that serves as the fulcrum of the curriculum management process. The SMT is compelled to execute its responsibilities in an efficient and effective manner thus keeping a delicate balance between the often-conflicting pressures from parents, teachers and the Department of Basic Education. The 2010 and 2011 reports by Umalusi highlighted major irregularity that occurred in Mpumalanga, where Mathematics and Physical Science papers were leaked which put the credibility of the Grade 12 Examinations results into disrepute. Semi-structured interviews were conducted, transcribed and thematically categorised. Findings revealed that political ploy; quality of teachers and attitudes of teachers towards Mathematics and Physical Science had driven the SMT frantic at a school level.
