Abstract

Objective To explore the professional competence of graduates of master of nursing specialist (MNS) and its influencing factors so as to provide references for nursing educators to improve the quality of nursing education of MNS. Methods A total of 153 graduates of MNS who graduated from 20 colleges in 2014 and 2015 were surveyed with the 'master of nursing specialist professional competence self-rating questionnaire′ from July 2015 to February 2016. Results The overall score of professional competence of respondents was (78.97±10.69) within a good level. Besides, significant differences were found in the professional competence score and the score of each dimension among age, marital status, whether having work experience, working life, graduation time, motivation of being a postgraduate, the relationship with their tutors, the opportunities to participate the academic exchange and scientific research projects, the number of published articles as the first author (P<0.05). Conclusions Graduates of MNS have good professional competence, but the educational ability is not very good. Colleges and nursing educators should provide them with varied opportunities to participate in academic exchange and scientific research projects and more chance to communicate with their tutor so as to improve their professional competence.
