Abstract

The high voltage DC (HVDC) parallel electric power system (EPS) is one of the most promising structures for the More Electric Air-craft (MEA), providing higher performance with less weight and less energy loss. The structure of a typical HVDC parallel EPS is illustrated in this paper. The method to share the load current among the generators in EPS is the key to optimize the performance. An “average current” scheme is derived after comparing different current sharing methods. To compare the EPSs consisting of 2 generators of the same power level and of different power levels, the HVDC parallel EPSs are modeled and the power supply quality including the dynamic responses in transient processes are analyzed by simulations. The results illustrate that the HVDC parallel EPS which consists of generators of the same power level provides a more stable power supply with better dynamic responses. The structure of the parallel connection and the current sharing scheme provide an effective solution for the development in the HVDC EPS for the MEA.
