Abstract

• A thoughtful reevaluation of all aspects of residency training is called for, including the problems resulting from the pyramidal system of appointments. The growth of the residency system, particularly within the past 15 years, has had considerable impact in terms of medical care as well as of medical education. The need to define objectives, to evaluate results, and to plan for the future is essential if residency training is to develop along sound educational principles.
