Methods The questionnaire of nursing status of intravenous infusion in national grade A tertiary hospital, which made by Chinese Nursing Association was conducted in 162 Oncology Departments 147 hospitals 27 provinces in March 2013 by convenient sampling method. Results All the oncology departments investigated had applied the technique of peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC). Pharmacy Intravenous Admixture Services (PIVAS) was built in 87 hospitals, accounting for 59.2% of the hospitals investigated. However, intravenous drugs, antineoplastic drugs and parenteral nutrition were prepared in PIVAS only in 34.0%, 37.7% and 33.3% of oncology departments. 9.3% and 71.0% oncology department used steel winged needle and venous indwelling needle to infuse corrosive drugs, and 15.4% and 79.0% department used steel winged needle and venous indwelling needle for hyperosmolar drugs. There were the number of PICC placement nurses higher than trained nurses in 56 (32.1%) of oncology departments, and there were more trained nurses than PICC placement nurses in 15 (9.3%) of oncology departments. Conclusions Infusion therapy has been developed rapidly in recent years, but there are still some problems, for example, the environment of infusion drug mixture should be safer, the selection of infusion catheters should be more reasonable, and the quality of PICC nurses needs improving.
