Abstract
Models of a 36MW submerged arc ferrosilicon (FeSi) furnace were developed for the simulation and evaluation of different control schemes in (Hauksdóttir et al., 1995), and (Hauksdóttir and Gestsson, 1996). The models developed, describing the present furnace controller, the electrode positioning equipment as well as the dynamics from the electrode positions to the electrode currents and the disturbance environment, effectively forming a FeSi furnace simulator, were then validated for two furnaces as well as for different operating ranges in (Hauksdóttir et al., 1998). In this paper, the validated simulator is used to evaluate the benefits of a decoupling controller (Hauksdóttir and Gestsson, 1996) compared to the present furnace controller which controls the current in each electrode independently.
