Abstract
Models of a 36MW submerged arc ferrosilicon (FeSi) furnace have been developed for the simulation and evaluation of different control schemes (Hauksdóttir et al., 1995). In particular, the part of the system associated with the control of the three-phase electrode currents which is done by positioning of the electrodes, was examined. In this paper, the dynamic models developed as well as two different static models, are used in a closed-loop simulation where the present current controller is included and the results are compared to closed-loop measurements. The one model that gives the best comparison to the closed-loop measurements is selected as the best model. A new decoupling control algorithm is then developed for the current control loop and its performance is compared to the present current control loop using the selected model and a measured noise sequence.
