Abstract

A functional classification of Moscow Oblast cities from 1984 employment data reveals seven major types: a multifunctional capital center (Moscow), 3 scientific centers, 25 satellite cities, 7 local administrative centers, 2 transport centers, 19 multifunctional industrial-administrative centers, and 15 industrial centers. Each city's employment structure is compared with that of Moscow, the functional types being broadly characterized in terms of their similarity to Moscow. Satellite cities, often spatial extensions of Moscow proper, and semi-autonomous rayon administrative centers with diversified economies turned out to be most like Moscow, whereas industrial centers and other highly specialized cities proved most dissimilar (translated by Jay K.
