Abstract
Irreversible chronic retinal degenerative diseasesare the main pathology of visual loss, and current clinical management often fails to prevent disease progression. In recent years there has been substantial progress in developing stem cell treatments for these diseases. Stem cell therapy has the potential to both replace lost, and protect damaged, cells by secreting neurotrophic factors. A variety of sources, including embryonic stem cell (ESC), mesenchymal stem cell (MSC), induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) and Muller cells show promise as therapeutic approaches for future cell regenerative medicine.(Int Rev Ophthalmol, 2017, 41: 153-158) Key words: retina; optic nerve; stem cell trasplantation
