Abstract

Abstract : A model developed previously to investigate the transport of electromagnetic fields and energy in solid-armature rail guns is simplified to exclusively study heating within the interior of the armature. A particular type of armature is then specifically studied, and the effect of variation of a number of parameters that affect its geometry is investigated. Results of the calculations are studied carefully and explained by basic physical principles. Some indication of how the results and conclusions can be used to influence design criteria for armatures is also indicated.
