Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) is the ability of a machine to perform cognitive functions such as perceiving, reasoning, learning and problem solving that human can do easily. AI has grown in popularity over the last two decades due to the availability of massive amounts of data generated by the Internet. In the recent past, governments and corporations have reaped significant benefits from the processing of this data using modern algorithms. Machine learning algorithms have grown in popularity, aided by different technologies such as the Internet of Things, robotic process automation, computer vision, and natural language processing. This chapter covers a collection of challenges affecting the transportation industry that is categorized as intelligent transportation systems. Traffic management, public transportation, safety management, manufacturing and logistics are some of the subsystems considered in intelligent transportation systems where AI benefits are put to use. Research focuses on specific areas of concern in the transportation industry, as well as difficulties that can be addressed with AI. The method entails secondary analysis based on country-specific data gathered from multiple sources. Furthermore, conversations on AI solutions for resolving challenges in the transportation business are being held in numerous nations around the world and at the end presented a case study.
