Abstract
As a result of the political changes in Europe and the concomitant disarmament process, military use of about 50% of what once were 1 million hectares of land used for military purposes has ceased since 1991. This process includes the withdrawal of the Western Group of the former Soviet Forces (WGT) as well as sites of the former GDR’s People’s Army, the six western Allies, the NATO and the German Federal Armed Forces.
