Abstract

In the Ottoman Empire, the city of Trabzon and its port was one of the most important places in the middle of the 19th century since it was possible to make trade between Persia and Europe by using Trabzon port. In these activities the key factor was the steamships which brought international trade and the European capitalism to the hart of the region during the century. The opening of Suez Canal in 1869 and Caucasian railway had enormous negative effects on the Trabzon trade. The First World War and the invasion of Trabzon by the Russians caused more problems like the closing of trade routes. Thus, Trabzon trade was not in a good condition in the first years of the Turkish Republic.
