Abstract

Abstract Ova from New Zealand Romney ewes were cultured in sheep serum at 36 % for 24, 48, or 72 hr and examined during or after the period of incubation for morphological appearance and cleavage. Of the 1–. 2–, 4–, and 6–cell fertilised ova, 66% cleaved but fewer (44%) did so among the 8–cell to 12– to 16–cell ova. After transfer of fertilised ova to recipient ewes. 13 of 22 non–cultured ova and 13 of 152 cultured ova were represented by embryos at autopsy. More ova survived culture for 24 hr than for 48 hr.
