Abstract

Abstract Five hundred and eighty-five ova recovered from a total of 188 ewes at laparotomy were examined for incidence and types of abnormality both immediately after recovery from the ewe and after periods of up to 72 hours' culture in dialysis chambers containing sheep serum at 36c. The dimensions of some normal ova were recorded after culture. Ninety-thme (16%) of the ova recovered at laparotomy were morphologically abnormal. Of these, 87% were involuted, 5% had degenerate cytoplasm, and 8% had thick zonae pellucidae. No regular increase or decrease was found in the incidence of abnormal ova recovered during two breeding seasons. Changes in the incidence and types of abnormal fertilised and unfertilised ova during culture were recorded. The majority of abnoffi1al ova during culture were unfertilised. The average ovum diameter was 175 microns, the average zonal cavity diameter 146 microns, and the average zona pellucida thickness 14.6 microns.
