Abstract

This chapter deals mainly with the development of culture in the South during and after the First World War until today. The government of the People’s Democratic Republic of Yemen has created this Centre with the role of taking full responsibility for collecting source materials for the history of Yemen and encouraging archaeological excavations, the creation of libraries and the documentation of local arts and crafts, and so on. The foregoing discussion of the inter-war period in cultural development has indicated a lack of any cultural intercourse between Aden and the hinterland. The Western Aden Protectorate was less fortunate; it was kept as a buffer zone between the northern sector of Yemen and Aden. After the Second World War it was evident that the wind of change that had swept the rest of the world would also bring change to Aden and South Arabia.
