Abstract
This paper analyzes the work of the historian Natalie Zemon Davis on the basis of its relationship with anthropology. Taking as axis the concept of culture, the goal is to reflect on the explicit and hidden dialogues that the author establishes with the anthropological literature, showing their changes over time. The paper divides Natalie Davis’ career in three stages: the 1970s, when she published her first book ( Society and Culture in Early Modern France ) and presented her first approach to anthropology; the 1980s, the time of the publication of The Return of Martin Guerre and Fiction in the Archives , which are clearly influenced by the debates of interpretative anthropology; and finally, the books written from the 1990s on, in which the author formulates a more dynamic analysis of cultural processes. O objetivo era, como ela mesma ressalta, da descoberta da importância de segundo Davis, analisar “como um homem se moveu entre pensar sobre os muitos lugares a partir dos quais a história diferentes sistemas políticos lançou mão de diferentes pode ser escrita – o que se mostrava especialmente fértil recursos sociais e culturais, e os misturou ou separou para no caso das narrativas construídas pelas três mulheres, sobreviver, descobrir, escrever, fazer relações e pensar sobre cujas trajetórias evidenciavam as múltiplas possibilidades a sociedade e sobre si mesmo” – tarefa que levou adiante deconstituição da condição de marginalidade (Palla- perseguindo pessoas, lugares e textos possivelmente cores-Burke, 2000, p. 109-110)
Se em seus primeiros textos a Antropologia aparecia como fonte de métodos e conceitos que fossem úteis às suas investigações, em suas pesquisas recentes o diálogo com antropólogos vem se expressando por meio do compartilhamento de problemas e desafios centrais à constituição de seu trabalho – como o esforço de fazer uma análise cultural que se desvencilhasse de qualquer esquematismo ou determinação exterior, atenta tanto às formas da narração quanto às dinâmicas dos processos de conexão entre fluxos culturais diversos
