Abstract
This article discusses the development of autochthonous devotional practices in the Bishopric of Cordoba at the beginning of the 19th century. It focuses particularly on some aspects of the religious beliefs that made it possible for parishioners to appropriate universal figures of Catholicism and include them in a devotional practice of their own. The article refers to religious practices such as those related to the Cristo de Renca, Santa Rosa de Lima and San Francisco Solano. These saints became closer to the faithful because they were in tune with the experiences of the believers themselves. By studying the giving of alms or the catholic rituals that accompanied it, the article explores the relationship that was built between a saint and his/her congregation. This was a relationship that made it possible to bring the dogma closer to the faithful and to make it more intelligible to them.
