Abstract

This work focuses on the investigation of antibacterial and biocompatible properties of a porous Cu(II)-cross-linked chitosan membrane (CCCM). The membrane shows fair biocidal action against the model bacterium Escherichia coli. The total protein and HSA adsorbed was found to be 263 and 75 μg/cm2. Finally, the 'diffusion cell model' was used to study adsorptive removal of urea from aqueous solutions. The results indicated that nearly 84.4% urea was removed by the membrane. Therefore, the Cu(II)-cross-linked membrane has potential to be used for as an alternative for hemodialysis membrane.
