Abstract

The crystal structure and the magnetic structure of the compounds Dy 3Ge 5 and DyGe 1.9 were investigated by neutron diffraction. The compound Dy 3Ge 5 has an orthorhombic structure derived from the tetragonal α-ThSi 2 structure, the ordered germanium vacancies being described by a density and displacive modulation. Below T N = 12 K Dy 3Ge 5 orders antiferromagnetically but the magnetic structure is fairly complex. The compound DyGe 1.9 has an orthorhombic structure that is quite different from Dy 3Ge 5 although it can also be derived from the α-ThSi 2 structure type. DyGe 1.9 gives rise to a uniaxial antiferromagnetic moment arrangement below T N = 29 K.
