Abstract

The crystal structure and the magnetic properties of the compound Nd 3Ge 5 were investigated by neutron diffraction and magnetic measurements. The compound Nd 3Ge 5 has an orthorhombic structure derived from the tetragonal α-ThSi 2 structure, the ordened Ge vacancies being described by a density and displacive modulation. Below T c =18 K Nd 3 Ge 5 orders ferromagnetic but only the Nd atoms at one of the two crystallographic Nd sites give rise to magnetic ordering. R 3Ge 5 compounds isotypic with Tb 3Ge 5 were found for R=La, Sm, Gd, Tb and Dy.
