Abstract
Forward and reverse Li/K ion exchange isotherms have been investigated by determining the composition and the solid phase percentages at the various stages of exchange, in order to study the large hysteresis loop found for this system. Two different lithium potassium phases, with interlayer distances 9·3 and 10·0 A respectively, are formed in both the processes. Nevertheless, a higher percentage of LiK (10·0 A) than LiK (9·3 A) is formed in the forward process while the opposite occurs in the reverse process. The large hysteresis loop of the Li/K system has therefore been related to the formation of different LiK phase percentages in the two opposite processes. The shape of the two isotherms is in good agreement with expectations based on the phase rule. A comparison between Li/K exchange of crystalline zirconium phosphate prepared either by direct precipitation or by refluxing amorphous zirconium phosphate in 10 M H3PO4 is also reported.
