Abstract

Crystal-field (CF) effects on Pr in amorphous and crystalline La 3Al and La 3Ga compounds are investigated through superconducting and magnetic properties. Strong evidence is obtained for a Pr 3+ singlet ground state in amorphous as well as in crystalline alloys. In addition, the results suggest that the local symmetry around the lanthanide ions is the same in nature in the crystalline compounds and in their amorphous modifications, in good agreement with NMR studies on Al and Ga nuclei.
