Abstract

Abstract The crystal structures of PtMnGa and PtMnAl were determined. Both compounds crystallize in the hexagonal Ni 2 In-type structure. In PtMnGa the platinum, manganese and gallium atoms occupy the 2c, 2a and 2d sites respectively. There is essentially no site interchange between the atoms, and ferromagnetic ordering of the manganese atoms occurs in this atomically well-ordered compound. PtMnAl has the same structure type, although in this case there is substantial site interchange between the atoms. This atomically disordered structure does not lead to long-range ferromagnetism.
