Abstract

The indentation test is one of the most commonly employed techniques for the characterization of mechanical properties of materials. It is an efficient and useful tool for the evaluation of mechanical properties of small volumes of materials, e.g., hardness, elastic modulus and fracture toughness, etc., through analyzing the relationship between contact force and contact depth on the indented specimens. As the contact depth is sensitive to the pile-up or sink-in of the indented specimens, crystal plasticity finite element method is used to study the phenomena of pile-up/sink-in during the spherical indentation simulation. The effects of single crystal plasticity material parameters on both the pile-up or sink-in behavior and macroscopic mechanical properties are studied. By comparing the effects of both macroscopic material parameters and crystal plasticity material parameters on the pile-up or sink-in behavior, the relationship between crystal plasticity material parameters and contact depth is revealed.
