Abstract

Single crystals of NdAl 3(BO 3) 4 were grown by top seeded solution growth from a BaB 4O 7 flux. The lattice constants and the space group of the grown crystal was confirmed to be a = 7.279(8) A ̊ , b = 9.370(6) A ̊ , c = 11.139(4) A ̊ , β = 103.35(5)° and C2/c by X-ray diffraction. At a cooling rate of 2.4°C/day and a crystal rotation speed of 30–40 rpm with seed orientation in the 〈201〉 or 〈100〉 directions, transparent and light violet colored crystals up to 10 × 15 × 20 mm 3 in size were obtained. Seeding in the 〈101̄〉 direction, rotation twins with the twin law of three-fold axis parallel to 〈101̄〉 were often formed. By X-ray topography, crystal defects such as growth striations, growth sector boundaries, dislocations, inclusions and cracks were observed.
