Abstract
AbstractA correlation is established between the variation in bonding energy throughout a series of transition element complexes of the same composition, CaLn2+ …. MnLn2+ …. ZnLn2+, and the extra stabilization arising from the splitting of the d‐orbital into two sets of different energy in the field of the ligand groups. Quantitative data for eighteen ligands are discussed in terms of ΔHL for the reaction equation image and two derived quantities, Em and Er, the “maximum stabilization energy” and “transition series contraction energy”. To a first approximation, Em and Er fall into classes depending on the number and nature of the atoms directly bonded to the metal.
