Abstract

A cryostat is described which permits measurement of the optical properties of solids at any desired temperature between 300° K and 4.2° K. Special attention has been given to the compactness of the sample holder and the surrounding radiation shield so that measurements can be carried out with the sample mounted in the 1½ cm wide gap of an electromagnet.
