Abstract

Summary - Cryoconservation of bananas and plantains was evaluated as an alternative technique for long-term germplasm preservation. Dehydrated zygotic embryos of Musa acuminata (AA) and M. balbisiana (BB) maintained in liquid nitrogen were successfully germinated after thawing. The average rate of survival was evaluated by the percentage of germinated embryos. Up to 70% of M. balbisiana and 74% of M. acuminata grew into complete plants. The simplicity and efficiency of the present developed technique, provides a promising alternative for long-term conservation of Musas germplasm. Preliminary results also obtained in coffee zygotic embryos support the idea that the same approach could be utilized for other tropical crops.
