Abstract

The Athenians condemned Socrates to death in 399 B.C., accusing him of having corrupted the youth. The accusers presented Critias's and Alcibiades's behaviour as proof. These two men were politicians that had brought to the big cities terror. When they were young, they had taken part in the Socratic circle. Xenophon cannot deny this connection, because it was known by everyone; however he demonstrates that the bad character of the two individuaIs was a trait prior to his meeting with the philosopher and that worsened above all after having abandoned his circle.
