Abstract

This chapter talks about five Norwegian Bible scholars (Arvid Schou Kapelrud, Sigmund Mowinckel, Ivar P. Seierstad, Jorgen Alexander Knudtzon, Anders Jorgen Bjorndalen) whose special field was the Old Testament. Knudtzon is recognized as an Assyriologist and known for his pioneering work on the ( Tell ) El-Amarna Tablets ; but he started as a philologically oriented theologian and an Old Testament scholar. Mowinckel was first and foremost an exegete; and for exegesis he drew on the methods and insights of all the cognate fields of study. Seierstad gave a full account of his position in his monograph on Die Offinbarungserlebnisse der Propheten Amos, Jesaja und Jeremia . Kapelrud was definitely more of a linguist and orientalist than his teacher Mowinckel ever was. Like his teachers Bjorndalen specialized in prophetological studies. They devoted their lives to the scrutiny of the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament in its context. Keywords: Anders Jorgen Bjorndalen; Arvid Schou Kapelrud; El-Amarna Tablets ; Hebrew Bible; Ivar P. Seierstad; Jorgen Alexander Knudtzon; Old Testament; Sigmund Mowinckel
