Abstract
The large-scale asymmetries in the release of latent heat in the Tropics should be an important source of planetary waves. According to planetary wave theory, such sources are accompanied by a convergence of eddy momentum flux. These planetary waves may provide eddy fluxes of momentum across the Equator from the winter to the summer hemisphere in agreement with observation.
