Abstract

This chapter presents an argument for the rigorous application of critical thinking in the field of behavior analysis. As we are besieged with fads, crazy controversial theories, and unvalidated treatments, the need for critical thinking is more important than ever. When presented with a new treatment proposal, behavior analysts employ critical thinking by asking “Where’s the data?” Taking advice without question is an example of casual thinking and is common in daily life where the stakes are not high. Sensory integration is one commonly used treatment that does not have the support of the behavioral community since the research does not meet our rigorous standards. Facilitated Communication is another “treatment” that has been shown to be phony, as the research has shown the key-pad responses actually represent the behavior of the facilitator rather than the client. We have rigorous methodological standards for ABA research because it has produced the highest level of evidence-based treatment.
