Abstract
This chapter reviews the historical foundations of critical race theory and its resonance and application in qualitative educational research. Critical race theory's current controversies in the political sphere, its emergence and departures from critical legal theory, its tenets of centrality of race, intersectionality, and experiential knowledge, and its wide-ranging applications in qualitative methods applied to educational research are discussed. This review concludes with implications for applying critical race theory in future educational research utilizing qualitative methods.
