Abstract

Landscape has recently been designated as a health promoting resource. However, it has proven difficult to identify the aspects of landscape that promote well-being and health. Based on a recent publication that summarized the existing evidence on health promoting landscape effects by analyzing more than 120 primary studies, we have developed a new evaluation method for a health impact assessment of public urban and natural areas. The method is composed of 52 evaluation criteria and has successfully been applied in Liebefeld, a peri-urban quarter of the commune of Köniz near Bern, Switzerland, an area characterized by intensive renewal. By focusing on health promoting effects – i.e., excluding patho genic impacts by noise, air pollution, etc. – the method permits a ranking of 15 separately evaluated parts of Liebefeld according to health promoting qualities. This allows the planning of future landscape development to include considerations of health promoting aspects.
