Abstract
ABSTRACTThe history of Creative Writing in Brazil is recent. The country may have many successful authors, some of them internationally recognised but, before 2006, there were no academic courses. Writing instruction came mostly from independent workshops. It was in that year that the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS) offered students the opportunity to write original creative work as their Master’s degree dissertation in Literary Theory. This first experience led to the establishment of the Creative Writing concentration (joining Literary Theory and Linguistics) in postgraduate courses; but it was only in 2016 that the first Creative Writing undergraduate programme was created. This pioneering work has been a valuable experience, deeply influenced by the development of the field in foreign countries, and has been changing the academic outlook for Creative Writing in Brazil. This article is a reflection on Creative Writing as an academic field in Brazil, and the related challenges, consequences, connections and perspectives for the future.
