Abstract

Creative Homeland Security: Imagining the next big solar storm aims to examine the use of creative practice within homeland security research. In this thesis, a solar storm disaster is identified as a threat to our homeland’s safety and security. The thesis will go into further detail about solar storm disasters, presenting a background of solar storm disasters. Creative works used in response of solar storms and other natural disasters will be discussed via a literary review. It will explain the methodology involved in constructing a research-centered, literary, fictional piece, or an Embedded Research Paper for this solar storm disaster. It will present the Embedded Research Paper, centered on a solar storm disaster. It will analyze the Embedded Research Paper, explaining how the piece was successful as a work of art while still being constrained to the DHS mission statement. It will show how the creative process has revealed new information and insight regarding solar storms and natural disasters. Finally, the thesis will be finished with a summary, conclusions, and recommendations to the Department of Homeland Security.
