Abstract
Creating a Rapid Response Strategic Reserve for Pandemics.
Highlights
Under the dark shadows of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), contact tracing has been identified as a path to illumination, both as a key tool to curb disease spread and as a prerequisite for pandemic readiness and response in the future
We propose the creation of a national resource patterned after the century-old reserve for the US armed forces: Tracing Reserve for Accelerated Contact Evaluation, Identification, and Triage (TRACE-IT)
The distinctiveness of the TRACE-IT force would be in the early response capability in unpredictable scenarios, similar to the readiness of reserve fighter pilots and soldiers and the support services they require
Summary
Under the dark shadows of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), contact tracing has been identified as a path to illumination, both as a key tool to curb disease spread and as a prerequisite for pandemic readiness and response in the future. We propose the creation of a national resource patterned after the century-old reserve for the US armed forces: Tracing Reserve for Accelerated Contact Evaluation, Identification, and Triage (TRACE-IT). A national corps of contact tracers must be recruited, trained, and made rapidly available for deployment at the first sign of outbreak of novel and familiar pathogens.
