Abstract

The aim of this study was to develop a numerical model for the process of non-uniform corrosion under realistic temperature-relative humidity variations. Non-uniform distribution of corrosion products and their expansion around the steel bar were modeled in 2D. Cohesive elements embedded in the finite element mesh were used to model concrete cracking under corrosion. The proposed model was used to predict crack patterns and crack propagation under tropical marine type and temperate marine type climatic conditions. The climates were characterized by significant variations in temperature and relative humidity that resulted in different crack patterns and crack widths.
