Abstract

Crack paths in cold drawn pearlitic steels are affected by microstructural anisotropy generated by cold drawing in the form of markedly oriented microstructure in the matter of pearlite colonies and lamellae, thus inducing strength anisotropy in the steel, crack path deflection and mixed mode propagation. This paper establishes a conceptual connection between the deflected cracks in heavily cold drawn pearlitic steels and the paintings by Picasso, Larionov and Goncharova.
